New airports are looked up automatically from the OpenFlights database (~6,000 airports). You can use either an IATA code (3 letters, e.g. ATL) or an ICAO code (4 letters, e.g. KATL) — ICAO codes are auto-normalized to IATA. Edits are saved locally — use Export JSON to commit them back to the repo.
